This past Thursday I competed in the Chiba Ekiden Relay in Japan with 5 other members of the Canadian national team with two others as alternates. The experience was  very rewarding however I felt a little upset about my personal leg as the team ran well. I was running the third leg and after Matt Brunsting ran a 5k personal best of 14:04 are team was in 7th place. He handed off to Malindi Elmore who had a great run 15:59 and really put are team in the mix handing of the sash in 4th with 5th and 6th right togeather. When she was coming in my heart was racing I felt a little out of my league, which is something that I need to work on. My confidance was a little low going into the event. After I got the sash I was running with American Ed Moran for the first portion of the race and I felt in oxygen debt from the start. I’m not sure if this is something that can happen from jet leg, but the last time I felt that way was after a trip back from Japan in 2008. Ed ended up pulling away after the first km and Evgeny Rybakov of Russia pasted me before the half way point. Just before 7k Liam Adams of Australia, you can imagine I didn’t feel too good and having it be a team event I felt bad about losing those positions. With 1k to go I put what I had left into it and handed off in 7th position, and felt bad that Carmen Douma-Hussar got the sash alone having to chase after the other teams, she ended up catching the Austrailian team after running 16:41 to hand off to Adam Hortian in 6th. Adam didn’t have a good day and ran feeling sick, he was also upset about his run and how it affected the team as he handed the sash off to Lanni Marchant in 9th. Lanni ran a solid last leg of an odd distance of 7.195k in 24:41 are team finished in 10th of 12 teams which was a little below are expectations. I feel that part of the reason for this was my leg 31:25. I found the race very difficult as it’s a race where you are running on your own and if you let those around you get away it becomes even tougher. The conditions were wind  3.3 miles/second and the temp. 16C . The two alternate runners ran a 5k on the track Natasha Wodak was the 3rd woman 16:38 and Scott Simpson was 6th on the mens side in 15:20. Team Canada completed the relay in 2:15:13 for the full marathon distance with legs of 5k Brunsting, 5k Elmore, 10k Nakluski (me), 5k Douma-Hussar, 10k Hortian and 7.195k Marchant.

  1. Was good to read your thoughts on how the race played out. I didn’t really know what happened to you guys. I felt bad for both of you, that you didn’t perform up to your capabilities. I guess its time to keep rolling!
